To all my young Christian sisters with an eye toward marriage:
You get a lot of advice about how to decide whom to marry. I won’t pretend to have any expertise in marital counseling, but in my nearly 13 years as a wife, I have learned a valuable lesson I want to share with you.
Oddly enough, this lesson was recently voiced by, of all people, Justin Bieber.
His engagement is inescapable news these days. Without trying to, I found myself reading a recap of his gushing Instagram post to his future bride. One sentence in particular stood out to me:
“I promise to lead our family with honor and integrity letting Jesus through his Holy Spirit guide us in everything we do and every decision we make.”
Ladies, think what you will about the Biebs, but he captures the key thing I would implore all of you to look for in a future husband.
Marry the man strong enough to lead your family. Continue reading “Marry the man strong enough to lead your family”
“I know I should have quiet time with the Lord every day, but, ugh, LIFE.”
This is something I hear often from both my peers and younger women I walk with in faith.
I get where they’re coming from. As a wife and mother who works outside the home as well as inside it, I absolutely get it.
For the woman who gets up early as it is and goes to bed later than everyone else in the house, the thought of getting up even earlier feels daunting. Those who are already struggling to balance all their responsibilities feel guilty about not making quiet time a regular occurrence but have no idea how to make it happen.
It’s not that they don’t want to honor God by giving Him their time; it’s more so that they don’t know how to make it part of their day. No one in a similar life circumstance has shown them how.
As I have listened to these women tell their stories, what I realized quickly is that they would benefit from a new way to approach quiet time. Continue reading “How to get quiet time with God when life isn’t quiet”
I’ve been putting off this announcement until just the right time. …
And it’s just the right time, friends.
On Aug. 11 — just two days from today — I will be stepping away from all social media and blogging activity for a period of time. This includes social media for personal use as well.
Call it a break or a rest or a sabbatical or whatever you like. I prefer the term “going dark” because that’s a CIA term and it just sounds cool … and I may have been watching too much Madam Secretary lately.
“BUT WHHHYYYYYY????” you ask? Why am I going dark? Continue reading “When Jesus invites you to take a break from Facebook”
We all need an infusion of courage from time to time. Or, in my case, basically on a daily basis. Fortunately for those who earnestly seek to know God and live a life worthy of his call, we have a wonderful Book full of reasons why we should not fear.
The Bible contains about 365 verses that tell us not to be afraid. Usually when God repeats Himself, it means we need to pay attention. He doesn’t speak these words for His own encouragement, but for ours.
He wants us to know how courageous we can be, if we just believe. Continue reading “12 Bible Verses for When You Need Courage”
