"You need to write about this," Karen told me as she gave the first of what would become many of her personal artifacts from a lesser known segment of Kansas City history. . These pieces I'm holding capture the astounding story of God moving across the lines that divide -- ocean, country, culture and class -- to bring Lao refugees to new homes in Kansas City during the 1970s and 1980s. . Following America's withdraw from Vietnam in 1975, Southeast Asia saw a massive humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands fled Laos to escape the brutality of the Pathet Lao regime. . Karen, along with many American Christians driven by the tenets of their faith, was on the front lines of the effort to resettle refugees in America. Ours was one of many local churches that stepped forward to help. That's Karen on the far right of the sofa. . To hear the story of everything that happened back then -- how two cultures of people came together to do whatever they could to help ease the pain of others and share HOPE -- is to understand better this heritage I have as a human ... and especially a woman of faith. . The Laotian refugee resettlement story found its way into my latest novel manuscript. Because, like Karen and all those who lived this history, I don't want this story to be relegated to a dusty scrapbook, forgotten. . This is why I write. It makes sense that editors and agents would focus so heavily on the first page of a manuscript. That's my go-to for deciding whether to keep the printed book in my hand. If it doesn't draw me in, guess what? I'm moving on to one of the many, many others on the shelf, looking for that promise of an indelible story. .
